Here’s a little nutrition secret. In the past years of working with nutrition clients at Lake County Strength & Conditioning, EVERY one of them has been deficient on the same, incredibly important, element of their diet.
Something that every single cell in the body is made of and needs every day in order to properly function. They have all been drastically low on their protein consumption.
Protein is the building blocks of our body. If you think of your body like a house, protein is the nails, studs and concrete that are used to make every single structure. Furthermore, when you consider that each day, all the cells in the human body are damaged from daily life and need to repair themselves with proteins, it becomes even more apparent that protein consumption must be at a sufficient level for healthy living.
Science is pretty clear that people, especially ones that exercise, need between .8 and 1.2 grams of protein / lb of bodyweight. If you take the middle of that range, 1g / lb, that means a 150lb person needs to consume around 150g of protein. Most clients starting nutrition with us are consuming less that 100g. That’s only ⅔ of the required amount of cell sustaining, damage repairing supplies that are needed to sustain their body’s structural health. That is obviously not adequate.
Our suggestion is to track your protein for a while and see where those numbers are with your current diet. If you are unsure about how to do this, or know you are falling short on your protein needs, contact us and we can help get you started.
